Heart to Heart is a local not-for-profit organization that provides support and assistance to foster and adoptive families in Montgomery, Autauga, and Elmore counties. It began as a project in founder CJ Brown’s garage in January 2020: she came up with the idea to start a completely donation-funded store where foster and adoptive families could shop for necessities, 100% free of charge.
Her journey to her storefront had its challenges, but she finally secured a space inside Frazer United Methodist Church in April 2020. She was then able to open for business during the summer. Everything in the store—from the items families need, to the hangers and clothing racks—was donated by local people who wanted to lend a hand. Donated items include clothing (ranging from baby to adult sizes), school supplies, diapers, luggage, and larger items such as cribs and strollers. If an expecting foster family needs an item they do not have in stock, CJ’s village of supporters comes together to either raise funds or find someone to donate the needed item.
Heart to Heart originally served only families in Montgomery County because of need and capacity; however, due to overwhelming support, they have been able to expand their reach and services.
Guardian is proud of and excited for our new relationship: we became aware of their need for diapers and wipes—items they distribute monthly to families—and were able to donate over 1,000 diapers and wipes to their wonderful mission. We were also able to assist them by donating 24 backpacks for students returning to school in the fall, and we are excited for chances to work with them in the future.
